Gents, another year has passed, and a new year is upon us. F’ing crazy! I’m sure I say this every year, but I really do feel like time flies so much faster the older you become.
This year on Effortless Gent – in addition to writing more about exploring, evolving, and improving your style – we branched out into other useful topics for a stylish man dedicated to self-improvement.
When a guy aspires to improve his style, he’s rarely satisfied enough to stop there once he conquers it. It becomes a mission of total self improvement – from his inner game and self confidence, to the way his home and workspace are decorated.
From your emails / responses on social, it sounds like a lot of y’all appreciated the larger variety of topics. So we’d like to do more of this in 2018.
Speaking of 2018, how can we continue to make the site better and more useful for you in the new year?
I put together a quick Q&A — if you can spare like 5ish minutes, filling it out would help us a lot.
Today, I want to recap our best articles from 2017. In case you missed them, here are the must-read posts published this past year on EG.
10 Easy Style and Clothing Hacks For Guys
Who doesn’t love a quick, easy-to-apply style shortcut? Here are 10 that you can make use of today, right now.
My favorite “hacks” are the tie knot one (the only tie knot you really need to know, plus an aside on pre-tying) and the right way to try on shirts in the fitting room before buying.
Imitate These 7 Classic Movie Characters to Improve Your Style
We profiled a few classic characters in this article and dissected their style, demeanor, and attitude. Some of these figures may have done unsavory things in their movies. But regardless of how you feel about them, there are always lessons to be learned!
Style Archetypes: The key to dressing well while still being yourself
Knowing the style archetype you identify with most will help you put together a wardrobe that more closely aligns with 1) who you are and 2) what you do day-to-day.
This conversation with my buddy Tanner from Masculine Style will help determine what makes the most sense for you and what fits your taste. On the flip side, you’ll better understand why you may hate certain types of clothes or can’t get into specific trends.
The Perfect Fit series
One of my goals this past year was to flesh out our Perfect Fit series, and we definitely stepped up our game. Here’s the complete list:
The Best Fragrances For Men: A Q&A with Dave from Fragrance Bros
I love this article and video Q&A I did with my friend Dave over at Fragrance Bros. I spent a few weeks gathering the best questions from EG readers within the private Facebook group and we knocked them out one by one in this interview.
Six Historic Menswear Quotes Still Meaningful Today
In this article our contributor Connor breaks down a few timeless quotes about fashion and style. I think you’ll find this plenty useful as you take a 10,000-foot look at your own style and wardrobe.
As you’ll see, great style and looking cool (cmon, who doesn’t want to look cool?) is more than just buying the right clothes.
Summer Clothes For Men: How To Stay (and Look) Cool In Hot Weather
This is one of those posts worth bookmarking and coming back to when the weather starts to warm up again. We go over colors, fabric, and fit for your summer clothing, plus what clothes to buy (both formal and casual).
Finally, a sample “capsule” (or Lean) wardrobe to get you started – plus examples that show you how to put it all together into awesome outfits.

How Justin Went from “No Clue” and “Uncomfortable” to Sharp and Tailored
Our first reader success story (of hopefully many more to come) that we profiled, Justin was a quick study who we saw (to put it cornily) blossom before our very eyes in the EG Facebook Group (don’t miss out on the fun! Join here.)
He’s also a special case because he happens to be 6’8” and 265 lbs.
Regardless of size, there’s a ton you can learn from this Q&A. In this article, he breaks down his process and how improving his style also improved his life. Great read if you’re just starting out and looking for a bit of inspiration.
Best No-Show Socks For Men (updated for 2017)
In which I extol the merits of the no-show sock, test out old favorites, and try a few new, promising pairs – all based on a few important characteristics like softness, comfort, lastingness, heel grip, and of course, if they’re actually a true no-show or not.
Turn a Small Idea into Big Success with a Side Hustle
I’m a big believer in the side hustle. This little website you’re reading right now started out as my own side hustle back in 2009 when I was still working full time in San Francisco as a web designer and front-end developer.
Instead of loafing out in front of the TV for 5 hours when you get home from work, why not spend 30 minutes to an hour building something of your own? It doesn’t have to be computer- or internet-based, as you see in this article.
Winter Clothes For Men: How To Dress for Fall and Winter
Another bookmark-worthy article, this is very similar to our Summer Clothes guide, but geared for winter.
We cover all the stuff you need to know – from colors, fabric, and fit, to specific items I suggest and how to put together sharp, winter-friendly outfits.
Men’s Wardrobe Essentials: The Clothes A Man Needs In His Minimalist Wardrobe
If you’ve been an EG reader for any amount of time, you know we focus on a Lean Wardrobe. In this article, I give you specific suggestions for each essential – from denim and sport shirts to belts and sport coats – and everything in between.
Maybe you’ve been working on building your LW but you’re not completely sure if you’re shopping the right brands. This article will get you on the right track.
How to Match Your Belt and Shoes: A Definitive, Visual Guide
One of the most basic, yet still very common, questions I get is something along the lines of, “Can I wear THIS belt with THESE shoes?”
I break down every possible scenario in this article, plus give you a handy dandy visual chart.
Enjoy The Party: How To Make Old Fashioneds Ahead Of Time
And finally, if you’ve ever been assigned the task of cocktail-making at a party, you know how it can take precious time away from the fun stuff, like hanging out and drinking with everyone else.
Next time, batch-make your cocktails ahead of time so guests can just pour themselves a drink whenever they need it without having to ask someone to make a round. In this article we focus on Old Fashioneds, but you can batch-make many classic cocktails the same way.
If you like this one, let me know so I can do other recipes in the future.
How can I make Effortless Gent better for you in 2018?
This site wouldn’t exist without you. So I want to make sure we continue to write articles that you find useful, applicable, and (hopefully) entertaining.
Best way you can help us? Answer these questions. Should take you 5ish minutes, tops.
