Spotlight On is something new we’re doing here at EG.

From time to time I come across products I think are cool, want to try, or already use, and feel it deserves a mention here on the site. Basically, it’s a way for me to showcase and share products, services, or experiences I like, and think you may like as well.

These aren’t sponsored posts; no one pays me to mention anything in this series. Do what you will with the info; you’re obviously not required to purchase or use these things. But if it does interest you, poke around the internets a bit further and see if it’s something you could use in your own daily life.

My friend Matt, founder of The Motley, knows his grooming products. When he tells me about a specific product or brand, I listen.

He’s introducing a new line of products called Baxter. Don’t get it twisted though; Baxter is new to The Motley, but not to the men’s skincare game. Baxter Finley, the company’s founder, launched the first line of grooming products designed specifically for men way back in the mid-60s.

40+ years in the game (any game, really) gives you plenty of time to really nail your product. Considering the number of publications in which they’ve been featured, they must be doing something right.

Time to reassess your skincare situation

If you’re like me you probably don’t think twice about the products you use. In fact, before I met Matt, I just used whatever K happened to have lying around.

Her products are high quality, but engineered to fit her skin and hair needs, not my own. In the long run, that’s no bueno. So put down your girl’s face wash and pomegranate-mango scented shaving cream, and get a set of your very own.

Specialized products can be pretty pricey on their own, which makes it hard to commit especially if you’ve never tried them before. But luckily for you (and for me), The Motley put together a Best of Baxter kit. You get travel size versions of the Daily Face WashShaving CreamShampoo and Face Moisturizer, all for $25.

This is perfect for the gent still easing their way into men’s grooming products (and out of their girlfriend’s) and looking for a way to try all the essentials without spending a ton.

“But wait, there’s more!”

To make things even sweeter, The Motley is also throwing in a $25 gift voucher (it’s like getting the kit for free), AND free shipping for those in the US. Damn, so basically you’re getting a free taste of Baxter.

If you’re still using your girlfriend’s $125 face moisturizer (or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you’re still buying Clean & Clear from CVS), give the Best of Baxter kit a try.

I’ve used Baxter’s products before. They’re good, but I didn’t find them to be worth the cost. To be fair, I can’t justify the cost of anything featured on the Motley related to skin care. When my dermatologist highly recommended Cetaphil’s face wash and moisturizer, I went that route and haven’t missed my other, more expensive, products. The same with shaving creams. I’m happy with Proraso (also sold @ Bath and Body Works under the CO Bigelow brand) cream.

They’re great products, don’t get me wrong. There’s a sweet spot between bargain bin junk and premium-priced brands and that’s where I prefer to be.

      Hi Ben,

Matt here from The Motley. While you might not find that Baxter is your brand, we’ve done a great deal of research to provide products with that are highly effective at a lower price point (Speick and Cremo Cream are two brands.) Cetaphil provides a line for skin types that can handle it, but we do our best to provide products to the other guys who require more advanced products (you’re lucky!)
Hopefully we’ll carry a product soon that’ll win you over in the future.

Thank you for your response, Matt. I realize everyone has their value threshold and I hope that no one reading takes my sentiments as disparaging against the brands that you carry. Like you said, I’m fortunate to have found products that work for both my skin and my budget.

I’ve never been disappointed when I’ve indulged and your store looks like a great place to do that.

I’ll admit that I’ve never tried the high end products, but I’ll second the Proraso shaving cream that Ben mentioned. It is fantastic stuff.

I haven’t had much luck with other products, so I don’t mind trying out a product, and getting a gift certificate in the process. I’ve always wanted to buy from motley, so the bonus of getting the Baxter kit too is great!

So as of this year, I just started growing my beard out. I found it was itchy and unruly ..sort of hard to tame. My buddy told me about mustache wax and beard oil .. has anyone else used this? He told me to try Detroit Grooming.. .. but I wanted to see if anyone else has had experience before I order. Again, my skin is pretty sensitive so I’m looking for something that won’t irritate it more. Any help is appreciated! Or if there are any other companies out there
