Kristen Ess Soft Shine Beach Wave Spray
The softest wave spray ever, the Kristin Ess Soft Shine Beach Wave Spray is suitable for all hair types, with a lightweight feel that gives you loads of texture and volume.
This cruelty-free product is made for use after you’ve dried your hair, unlike wet sprays that can sometimes give a rough, slightly crunchy texture. Ingredients like algin and carrageenan are natural water holders and leave your hair well-conditioned, easy to comb, with a non-greasy shine, whether it’s styled or not.
The non-drying and non-sticky formula is also free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates.
Another great part about the Kristin Ess spray is that the less you use, the more effective it is. This ensures each bottle lasts you quite some time!
And for you “manly” men out there, don’t let a brand name like Kristin Ess fool you. The Shine Beach Wave Spray’s ingredients are perfectly unisex, so anyone can use it. (That goes for any of the grooming products we mention. Nothing, even fragrances, are fully 100% for men or for women… it’s all branding.)

The Wildcards Worth Your consideration
B’s Favorite *Not* On Amazon: Beardbrand Sea salt Spray
I’ve been using Beardbrand’s Sea Salt Spray the past few years and it always works incredibly well for me, not to mention, smells amazing. My favorite scent is Old Money (I also use Beardbrand’s hair products in the same Old Money fragrance).
"Sea Salt Spray takes the standard messy waves and volume you get from a day swimming in salt-water and adds a touch of extra texture and hold to the style. Infused with kaolin to mimic the grittiness of sand, it's almost as good as a day at the beach." -Beardbrand. Available in multiple fragrances.
While not available on Amazon, I’d highly recommend considering Beardbrand products, even if you don’t have a beard (like me). Everything they make is of premium quality, with gentle, natural ingredients that work with your skin and hair.
They’re so confident in and transparent with the ingredients they use, that they’re listed in detail on every product page.
A PASTE THAT ACTS LIKE SEA SALT SPRAY: Hanz de Fuko Quicksand
Originally I bought Hanz de Fuko Quicksand to use as a “finisher”, a product that will style and hold my hair. But I have thicker, straighter Asian hair, and it simply didn’t work well for that purpose.
But! I discovered Quicksand to be a great pre-styler; a product you apply on damp hair, right before you blow dry into the style you want. This, in effect, gives you the same results as a sea salt spray.
The Hanz de Fuko site says their Quicksand formulation is one part styling wax, one part dry shampoo. The dry shampoo part is definitely dominant. I can sense that as I apply it and as it dries.
Your mileage may vary; maybe you’ll have luck with this as your finishing product, especially if you have the right type of hair.
But if you’re reading this article, there’s a good chance you’re looking for a pre-styler that works like sea salt spray. Hanz de Fuko Quicksand works well in this regard.
Your Commonly Asked Questions About Sea Salt Sprays
Here are some frequently asked questions about sea salt sprays!
What does sea salt spray actually do?
Sea salt sprays are meant to refresh your “next day” hair since it absorbs excess oil and prompts strand separation. It’s a good tool to use between washes.
At the same time, if your hair is too clean (e.g. after a shower), giving it a limp, lifeless look… sea salt spray can help give it some texture, making it easier to style. It’s perfect as a “pre-styler” right out of the shower, before blow drying.
Is it okay to use sea salt spray every day?
No, it isn’t advised to use sea salt spray every single day. The salt can dehydrate hair strands which can lead to brittle hair.
Some sea salt sprays don’t use actual sea salt, and these can often be used more frequently between washes. Even then, the ingredients used will be meant to mimic sea salt, so using it every day still isn’t recommended.
Can you use sea salt spray as hairspray?
Not if you want to freeze your hair in place. If you want a flexible, non-stiff hold, sea salt spray offers styling with natural movement.
But for a true hold, you’ll need actual hairspray. Hairsprays do come in different strengths, so you can find some that provide a decent freeze without turning your ‘do into a helmet.
Fight That Limp Hair Look with Sea Salt Spray
You don’t necessarily need to visit the beach for that tousled, textured hairstyle. There are so many sea salt spray products on the market that effectively do the same thing!
Many of the products here contain beneficial ingredients to effectively nourish your hair and give you the desired results.
