Implement What Works Best, Discard The Rest

Back To Top

I’ve been running Effortless Gent since 2009 when I was in my mid-twenties. And even earlier than that, I remember being interested in my own personal style since I was about 7 years old.

Back then, it was a studded fingerless glove (Michael Jackson inspo), “Hammer Pants”, and a left ear piercing. (In the 90s, our culture had weird associations with a right ear piercing. Glad we’ve mostly gotten past all that.)

As I became older, I saw other types of fashion and my tastes evolved. In my early to mid-teens, it was much more fashion-forward (with a 90s/2000s hip hop slant). In college, my style was influenced by the culture, music, and laid back lifestyle I was exposed to on campus.

I can’t remember where I picked this up, but it’s always stuck with me:

Be open to everything. Adopt what resonates with you. Discard the rest.

This applies to many aspects of life, and I suggest you always look at experiences through this lens. But since this is a men’s fashion website, let’s focus specifically on using this outlook to design and customize your own personal style.

Fashion Tiktok Accounts With Varying Styles And Backgrounds

I’ve included men’s TikTok fashion influencers from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and body types in this list. Each guy has their own unique style and perspective….

  • Some are more high fashion and luxury brands, with looks straight off the runway
  • Others are thrift shop kings, only wearing clothes that are vintage or secondhand
  • Some are DIY upcyclers—patching and / or repurposing garments and making their own customizations
  • Some are hardcore Brooklyn hipster, others are classic preppy / trad aficionados
  • Some are 100% streetwear, others are full-on Italian tailoring

It’s important to get style inspiration from every corner of the menswear world. Be an observer, adopt and incorporate what you like, and discard the rest. That’s truly the best way to hone your personal style.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Jeff Yamazaki

@jeffyamazaki

Easy-to-wear looks that are casual and comfortable, yet still really put-together. Jeff also regularly features AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) brands that you may not have heard of but are worth your consideration.

Jonathan Kirby

@jonathan.kirby

Simple, casual, easygoing looks that pretty much anyone can pull off. His style gives me chill Brooklyn Dadcore vibes.

Dapper Dom

@dapperdom

Self-professed cool dad Dom features a ton of easygoing cozy casual looks with hints of streetwear and prep. Dom’s also a bigger guy, so if you have a similar body type, you’ll find lots of inspiration here.

Mr. B. Thompson

@mr.bthompson

Brandon’s style is what I’d consider comfy tailoring, a laid-back, everyday approach to suiting. He easily pairs turtlenecks with suits in the winter, and lightweight linen shirts and cotton blend jackets in the spring and summer. His casual game is on point too; sporty and modern with a nod to elevated streetwear.

Julian Carter

@juulian.c

Julian upcycles and repurposes his vintage and thrift finds into some cool shit. It’s not my style personally, but I appreciate the creativity and how he wears everything so well. Just goes to show you don’t need to spend a ton of money to have serious style.

Charles Gross

Back To Top

@charlesgross

Charles knows the ins and outs of luxury brands and high fashion. I learn so much watching his videos and it makes you appreciate the art and caliber of quality that goes into a pair of $1,000 shoes, or a $25,000 bag.

Devan on Deck

@devanondeck

Devan features a nice blend of tailored, upscale streetwear looks and peppers in a mixture of brands—some well-known, some up-and-coming, and some obscure / one-of-a-kind.

Damien Broderick

@damienbroderick

Damien provides a badass twist on quite classic, casual looks. Tailored trousers, knitwear, button-up shirts, he knows how to mix the dressy and the casual for a perfect high-low ensemble. He takes you through a step-by-step process of putting together his outfit, usually starting with the pants and ending with accessories or a fragrance.

Andrew Snavely, Primer Magazine

@primermagazine

My friend Andy runs an incredible site, Primer Magazine, that focuses on men’s self development and affordable style. His content and photos are top notch and he brings a bit of that over to TikTok. He doesn’t post a ton of videos, but when he does, you know it’s gonna be fire.

Ethan Glenn

@ethantglenn

Ethan does laid back casual looks and relaxed silhouettes well. His TikTok is a mix of men’s fashion and lifestyle-related stuff (from making drinks, to fun home goods). He also has his own brand, Every Other Thursday

Jake Woolf

@jakewoolfstyle

Jake, a writer at GQ, strikes a good balance between high fashion and affordable style in his content. Yes, he covers Met Gala looks, but he can also show you how to dress well in hot weather on a budget. And presumably, working for GQ allows you to experience many different types of garments, from budget to luxe. So that gives Jake the insight and expertise many other content creators might not have. And overall, his style recs are very much in line with what I suggest—get your basics and essentials, nail the perfect fit, have a few stand-out pieces that you enjoy wearing, that’s it.

Christopher Snead

Back To Top

@qrissnead

One thing I noticed about Christopher’s TikToks is his focus on understated, quality products. Some brands you may be familiar with, others are smaller brands / stores you may not have heard of. All are worth checking out. Also really love his general color palette, lots of menswear neutrals.

Parker York Smith

@parkeryorksmith

I appreciate Parker covering the 101s of men’s fashion. Across his body of work, he’s gotten really granular and covered almost every possible item of clothing and how to wear it / what to wear it with. I’d classify his style as sharp casual with a fresh LA influence.

Nolan White

@nolandanielwhite

Nolan’s TikTok feels a bit more niche, covering clothing and accessories brands that you may not have heard of if you aren’t fully entrenched in the menswear world, like Kapital and Paratodo. Luckily, he also covers well-loved and familiar brands (Uniqlo, Cartier). Nolan also features great round-ups and recommendations for everything from watches to boots.

Brock McGoff, The Modest Man

@brockmcgoff

Brock is THE man to see if you’re of modest height (say, 5’6” and under) but want to look good, meaning, not swimming in your clothing. His TikTok features tips for achieving sharp, classic style if you’re a shorter guy. And be sure to check out his two sites, The Modest Man and The Slender Wrist (smaller watches ftw).

Tony Tran

@thetonytrn

I’d describe Tony’s style as cool and casual but more fashion-forward. Even if you don’t consider yourself that stylish, you can still learn a lot seeing how he pairs certain pieces together, and how he mixes silhouettes.

Style Turner

@thestyleturnernyc

Turner is a personal stylist whose TikToks help you master the basics of personal style. If you need more capsule wardrobe inspo, you’re trying to transition your wardrobe from one season to another, or are simply looking for good recs, give his account a follow. He discusses and recommends a lot of the the stuff we do here on EG.

Yung Fontina

Back To Top

@yung_fontina

Ryan is a model, so naturally, he could make wearing a garbage bag look sexy. Contrary to the prevailing advice since 2010 or so (always wear slim fit), he shows how looser, relaxed fits can look great. Yes, even on a slim frame. He also does proportions really well, pairing a higher-waisted trouser with a cropped shirt or tucked in button-up, for example. Ryan also owns an awesome cafe in Brooklyn called Sweetbee Cafe.

Yetti Rice

@yetti.rice

Darijan showcases great casual style on a big and tall frame. The fit and drape of his garments are perfect; never too tight, nor too loose. He understands fit and proportion for his body. I get emails from dudes who say they’re big and tall, and therefore, don’t know how to dress well. Yetti’s TikToks are a masterclass in doing just that.

What My Boyfriend Wore

@whatmyboyfriendwore

Sergio’s looks, recommendations, and overall video presentations are really clean and easy to implement. I’d categorize his style as mostly smart casual, with a few casual looks sprinkled in. While the fit of his clothing is somewhat slimmer than what’s currently on-trend, they fit his frame perfectly and he always looks great. Sergio’s color palette and pattern combo choices are always on-point as well.

Jeeves NYC

@jeeves_ny

This account is a bit different, in that it’s not specifically about men’s style, but about cleaning. Zachary dispenses tons of laundry and dry cleaning tips, as well as shows you how to properly wash your clothes and get rid of old stains. I’ve learned a lot about fabric and clothing care from this account, so definitely worth a follow!

Ryan Sullivan

@sullivanryan

Ryan doesn’t take clothing too seriously, which I think is why I enjoy following his account. His style’s definitely on the trendier / streetwear side, but it’s fun to hear his perspective / commentary on different styles and clothing he picks up.

Tim Dessaint

@timdessaint

You can learn a lot from My buddy Tim. While his style leans more fashion-forward, he has the basics of color coordination and proportion down pat. Watch enough of Tim’s vids and you’ll be tempted to give looser fits a try too.

Tanner Leatherstein

Back To Top

@tanner.leatherstein

An experienced leatherworker takes every popular brand’s leather goods and puts it through the ringer, examining quality and construction and putting a number value on it. Of course, a brand’s product is more than just leather quality, but it’s interesting to know how much something costs in materials and labor (and the premium you’re paying for brand affinity and status).

Brian Sacawa, He Spoke Style

@hespokestyle

Brian’s the guy to follow if you want a lesson or three in how to look good in a suit. The man knows his formalwear and true business casual. If you want to look sharp no matter what, follow this account.

Ethan Wong

@ethanmwong

Ethan has perfected slouchy tailoring and wears it well. Full cut jackets and trousers, vintage tailoring, true classic stuff from the 60s, etc. What I like about Ethan’s TikTok and website is his overall philosophy behind clothing and his emphasis on the importance of finding your point of view when you dress.

Wisdom Kaye

@wisdm8

Wisdom Kaye is a model, so naturally, everything looks cool on him. But what I like most about his account is his inventiveness and creativity with his clothing and outfits. Even if his overall aesthetic isn’t anything you could imagine yourself wearing, there are still plenty of takeaways and things to learn about color coordination, layering, and proportion.

Noah Williams

@noahwilliamsstyle

Noah’s style is mature, grown up, classic smart casual. Nothing too out there or flashy, just great essentials and basics in a pleasing color palette that are easily worn together. He also chats about watches and features some of my favorite models.

Mark Boutilier

@mark_boutilier

Mark is Fashun with a capital F, at least compared to me and my style, but I enjoy seeing what he talks about on his account regardless of if I’d ever wear it or not. I can’t always tell if he’s being serious or sarcastic so it’s like a fun guessing game. And I’ve discovered new brands that do match my aesthetic by watching his vids. Like I’ve been saying, be open to everything, adopt what you like, discard the rest.

Laura and Nicolas

Back To Top

@laurandnicolas

Literally a couple doing fit checks for every TikTok. But I like Nicolas’ overall look and aesthetic. Simple color palette, clothing fits well, classic silhouettes. Can’t go wrong with a base wardrobe like this, and if you ever want to experiment with other colors and fits, it’s an easy jump.

Nick Urteaga, Coastal Flicks

@coastalflicks

Style inspo for the big boys! His profile says that, and it’s true. Nick does a great job showcasing outfits that look great for a guy his size. TBH I used to be a big guy too, and clothes that work for most average body types may not fit so great when you’re bigger. Nick doesn’t gatekeep his favorite brands. Also has great outfit inspiration on his page.

Rashad Little

@mrrlittle

If you’re tall and slim, Rashad’s got some great outfit inspo for you. He does dressy looks well, he does streetwear and casual looks well. Even if you’re not tall, dark, and handsome like this dude, you can still pick up a lot of great tips and tricks from how he styles his outfits and the colors he wears together.
